Welcome to the first official Mikan maga(ZINE) for ALTs! It’s a new series that goes beyond the surface level details of being a JET and goes in depth about Japan life, goals, impressions, surprises and much more. This month we sat down with Sam and Oscar to discuss their new lives in Ehime. With this open book prompt, their very distinct perspectives took the conversation in interesting directions, touching on subjects like culture clashes, mental health, and the age old question of “Why JET?” Together they give this series a strong start with the kind of nitty-gritty details you can only find in the Mikan maga(ZINE)!

A word from the maga(ZINE) mastermind:
Hello everyone, my name is Dillon. I am a second year ALT in Matsuyama. I want to welcome a new monthly post to the Mikan Blog that’ll be happening in partnership with Gizelle and Justin. This new monthly post will be called; Mikan maga(ZINE) . This Mikan maga(ZINE) is all about, well you guessed it… Mikans, otherwise known as the ALTs in Ehime.
I love art and the expression you can have with it. So, I decided to start this project as a means of getting to know ALTs all across Ehime and to bring the community that much closer. In doing so, I also wanted to tackle something new by challenging myself and so I thought it’d be a perfect idea to do a series with the old and new ALTs.
In this series, I will be interviewing a select number of ALTs for the maga(ZINE), asking questions catered to a theme; these themes will be surprises so please get excited. Thereafter, me, Justin and Gizelle and the ALTs selected will create a ZINE; a collage and hand-lettering; personal art filled with pictures, drawings, clippings, quotes, anything as far as the eye can see.
This maga(ZINE) will help promote creativity, authenticity, but also most importantly, a community. Please look forward to reading and looking at the ZINEs created by your fellow ALTs and also please look forward to possibly being chosen in the future months. Thank you so much everyone, I look forward to the beautiful ZINEs created by each and every single one of you!!
