Before becoming a JET, I was a fourth-year undergrad student majoring in Accounting and Business Analytics. I had heard about the JET Program a few times when I was in high school. However, I hadn’t considered applying for the program until I studied abroad in Tokyo in my third year of college. After having such a great experience studying abroad, I decided to apply for the JET Program.
Hobbies/Interests: Some of my hobbies include reading and traveling.
While I’m in Japan, I’m hoping to explore some traditional Japanese art/activities, such as flower arranging (ikebana) or tea ceremonies (sado).

Call me M. I was a certified chartered accountant back in Singapore before coming to Japan. I came to Japan to touch grass and see the sun. I only get to see the moon. I also didn’t know stars existed cause my country is so bright late at night.
Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy doing yoga a lot and also love playing sports like tennis and cycling. I’m keen to hike mountains in Japan, such as Mount Fuji and Mount Ishizuchi. Hit me up if you are keen!

I was a junior high English teacher before coming to Japan. I had always had an interest in Japan and the JET Program. Working as a teacher back home helped push me to pursue this new journey, and I am excited to see where it takes me.
Hobbies/Interests: I like reading, writing, watching movies, and doing many outdoor activities.

Hi! I’m Gabriela, 27 years old, from the Philippines. I was a public school teacher in the Philippines for more than four years. Even before becoming a public school teacher, I had already planned to apply for the JET Programme. However, I wasn’t yet confident enough to work abroad and leave behind my familiar routine. So, I decided to build up my courage and gain experience first. I also wanted to serve my country for a while. After four years of pondering over it, I made the bold choice to submit my application for the JET Programme and I was thrilled to be accepted.
Hobbies/Interests: Hmmmmm, karaoke nights are my jam (being Filipino adds a flair to that! lol). You’ll usually find me glued to a TV, watching a series (Gilmore Girls is my obsession aotm). I love reading poetry. I love how it stirs raw emotions and taps into universal experiences, making people feel seen and understood in a very artistic way. I love romanticizing life, so I take pictures and videos of every mundane thing I see, or anything I find pretty, simple, calm, and serene.
I want to get into travelling (I’m such a hermit, so I’ll try not to spend all my Japan experience cocooned in my apartment). Lately, cooking has become a hobby, too (living solo means whipping up my own meals). I’m really looking forward to festivals and other culturally immersive experiences.

When I was at university in Melbourne, Australia, I started studying Japanese and linguistics. After a long history of studying French, music and psychology in school, I ended up swapping over to a major of Japanese and Gender Studies! I used to be many things, such as a piano teacher, barista, Korean skincare retail consultant and data analyst for a social enterprise supporting women and feminist values.
Exactly two years ago, I went on a half-year exchange to Rikkyo University in Tokyo, and honestly had the best time of my life there. Ever since moving back to Australia after that, I’ve been feeling like something was missing and was a bit lost and stuck with my personal career track…….. I’ve actually always wanted a job where I could connect with and help more people, reconnect with Japanese culture, and even though I was a piano teacher, I’ve always wanted to try teaching a classroom full of students!
Thus, here I am! Although I applied to the JET Programme on a whim, I am so happy that I did, and so grateful for being able to live in Japan again 🙂 it’s really comforting to be back~
Hobbies/Interests: Before coming to Japan, I was into music (I play piano and love karaoke!) and enjoyed spending my time in cafés getting coffee, sometimes playing a game or two on my switch, watching movies, going to the gym and spending time playing with my cats! Since coming to Japan, I’ve been recently into doing more Japanese cooking, and have just started driving by myself, which I really like! I really want to get into more active activities such as cycling, dancing and running, meeting and socialising with new people here when I can, and traveling and exploring new horizons along this part of Japan :)… and also hopefully drastically increase my level of Japanese along the way haha.

I returned from Japan exactly 10 years ago after graduating from university. As I sat on the bus to the airport, many memories of my time in Japan came to mind and I missed it very much. I decided within myself that I would definitely come back to Japan again, and next time with my family.
In January 2024, I had my second daughter and was on maternity leave. When I was considering whether to return to work or do something different, I decided to go to Japan with my family. I then looked for a job in Japan, learned about the JET program, and applied. There were so many applicants that I was nervous until the final results came in, but I am very happy that I was accepted.

Hi, everyone! I’m Lydia, and I’m from a place called the Wirral in North West England. Before I came to Japan, I was using my Psychology degree to develop digital support programmes for people with eating disorders, and working in suicide prevention. I LOVED my job but after 6 years I was desperate to try something new, and Japan was calling my name!! I visited in September 2023, fell in love and applied to JET in November 2023 after speedrunning a TEFL and crossing my fingers. I’m now living it up in the inaka, and waking up to a view of a temple each morning isn’t too bad. Every day I experience at least 50 ‘pinch me’ moments.
Hobbies/Interests: I looooove to explore, and I’m always up for an adventure! Whether it’s uncovering the hidden gems of Shikoku or navigating the big cities, I’m always up for meeting new people and ticking more places off my bucket list. Hit me up if you’re just as consumed by wanderlust! I also love photography, vlogging, cafe-hopping (I have an unhealthy obsession with matcha), skateboarding, baking, gaming and writing poetry – hoping to become a regular at the haiku bar in Matsuyama and get my very own pen name from the bar owners!

I graduated in May 2022 with a degree in International Relations from the University of Massachusetts- Boston. During my time at UMB, I had a focus on China and even wrote and published a thesis on U.S.-China affairs. After completing my degree, I interned at the White House in the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and then worked at a non-profit called More Than Words as a Youth Development Coordinator, supporting system-involved youth in their academic and professional journeys. Originally, I planned on teaching English in Taiwan, but things didn’t pan out. I heard about JET through word-of-mouth and decided to submit a last-minute application since I was determined to live and work outside the U.S. before pursuing a Master’s degree.
Japanese pop culture has always been a vital part of my interests and hobbies; truthfully, I think it might have even played a role in shaping who I am today. I never thought Japan would be the first country I’d visit outside of North America, let alone that I would actually be able to live here!
Hobbies/Interests: My hobbies include video games, makeup, hiking, and road trips! I’m genuinely excited to explore everything Japan has to offer, from unique foods to shodō to cool J-fashion trends.

I’m from California, US and graduated college with a BA in Global Studies with emphasis on East Asia. Which is one of the ways I heard about the JET program― through my Japanese teachers. I own a Mexican salsa business and sell at my local farmers’ market, however I don’t see myself growing it the way I want to, so I needed to switch things up. On top of running a business I’ve also been a substitute teacher for the past 2 years. I was drawn to Japan due to my interests in anime, fashion, car culture and how Japanese pop culture takes inspiration from hispanic culture. I enjoyed subbing so I took a shot at JET and now we are here.
Hobbies/Interests: I’m looking to explore hiking and bouldering, the car scene, winter sports, and just getting lost in Japan. A few of my interests are fashion, music, running, typewriting, climbing, and learning more about other cultures. I’m also an aspiring polyglot but it’s tough out here. Some hobbies I would say are, entrepreneurship, I love talking about ideas and helping people execute them, and sewing. I got into sewing and fell off, i would love to pick it up again. One more hobby I would like to get into is learning how to DJ.

Hello! Before Japan, I had been studying at the University of Liverpool for the past 4 years, my major being Civil Engineering. I think the tedium of that sort of brought me to the mindset that I needed to do something interesting and different for the next few years after University, even if it didn’t relate to my course, just so I could build some life experiences. During lockdown, I studied a little bit of Japanese. That knowledge brought me to the JET Programme and it seemed like a perfect fit.
Hobbies/Interests: My main hobby is travelling. Seeing and involving myself with other cultures is always something I want to be doing, which I suppose, the JET programme is perfect for. I also enjoy listening to music and watching movies, so I can debate you under the table with those topics.
I’m hoping to explore the big cities of Japanー I love places with lots of people and activities going on.

I’ve spent a long while doing mundane jobs like driving forklifts and doing construction site laboring just to get by and I decided I wanted to expand my horizons. That’s when I applied for the JET Program.
I’ve always had a great fascination with Japanese culture and through lots of exposure to Japanese media like anime and games, it painted a picture in my head of what my life would be like if I actually moved to Japan. It gave me the motivation to teach myself Japanese for a year and a bit prior to applying for the Jet Program. My self studies pushed me to finally make the decision to work abroad in Japan to become better immersed in the language.
Hobbies/Interests: I am a 2D traditional artist and cosplayer/cosplay maker. I want to hone my craft while in Japan but I want to immerse myself in activities such as Kendo, Iaido, and learning more about Japanese history. I’m on a massive samurai binge after playing Ghost of Tsushima and watching Shogun on Disney+.

Before JET I was a Web Designer. I also served in the Air Force Reserves from 2018-2022 as a 2T2 (Air Transportation). I always wanted to travel to Japan because I love poetry and art. I was planning on getting my Masters with the MEXT Program when I came across the JET Program. Right away I felt the JET Program aligned more with my reasoning for wanting to go to Japan. Cultural immersion, high chance of inaka, and community and educational work, SIGN ME UP! After I left the air force I decided to apply in September of 2023. I am so happy to be placed in Uchiko, I couldn’t have asked for a better placement.
Hobbies/Interests: I love poetry. So when I found out Ehime was where Haiku originated I was ecstatic to learn more about it. I plan on visiting libraries, cafes, maybe try and find some poetry events. I love slow hiking and writing as I hike. I also like art and cultural museums. I want to learn more about the floating world and art in general from the Edo period. I also enjoy visiting places with interesting architecture. I love taking pictures of old or beautiful doors, tree textures, moss textures, and flowers.

I studied Economics in University and started taking Japanese Language classes as well. I made lots of friends during the weekly, legendary German-Japanese Nomikais and also did a study abroad in Kanazawa― experiencing anything “Japanese”, from tea bowl pottery to Zazen and anything food/drink related. Then, in Germany, I worked part time as a tutor for Japanese and Korean exchange students, showing them German life (from “Beergarden” to “How to Open a Door with a real key”). This was so much fun that I decided to fully commit to this kind of lifestyle as a CIR in Uchiko now.
Hobbies/Interests: I’d love to do some outdoor events such as hiking or spending time in nature. Also, lots of Onsen-Meguri. I’m looking forward to participating in some local game store events in Matsuyama for Magic the Gathering and similar card games or board games. You might also catch me in the cinema watching either some horror or sci-fi movie. I’m on a mission to devour every karaage on sight, especially if beer is involved (New Adventurers are welcome to help).

I have worked with children and young adults in a variety of jobs over my working life, including at a kickboxing dojo, an English school and working in summer camps. Several years ago, I spent a considerable amount of time travelling in Asia, seeing another side of the world than what I am used to. Japan was always on my list for where I wanted to see, however, before I had the opportunity covid struck and I was homebound.
I decided to follow one of my passions and do a bachelors degree in Biology at Bangor University but after finishing my time there I decided that I wasn’t done with the world quite yet. I spent the last year working as a Teaching Assistant at a secondary school in England whilst I applied for the JET program.
I saw JET as the perfect place for both my passions and my experience to intersect and culminate into an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience, as well as a chance to experience Japan, work in a field I enjoy and hopefully give a little back in a meaningful way.
Hobbies/Interests: I love sports and adventure. I’ve always had a vested interest in team sports as well as martial arts and climbing growing up. They have always been a source of joy from the sense of camaraderie to pushing myself to improve. Exploring new places, trying things I’ve never done and developing new perspectives on how to see the world has always been a fascination of mine. Japan provides an incredible opportunity to pursue these passions and I hope to experience the culture and develop meaningful connections whilst pursuing what I love.

Before I came to Japan, I was teaching English online to adults. Many of the students I taught were from Japan and I always learned a little more about Japan with every lesson I had with them. I had thought about teaching overseas, but was unsure of which country to go to. With every lesson I taught, the idea of going to Japan became deeply rooted as my ideal destination. In addition to that, my aunt travelled to Japan for a program in agricultureー she always spoke positively of her experience in Japan and how much she wishes she could go back. So when the applications for the JET program went live, I jumped at the opportunity because all signs pointed to Japan- and here I am!

Hello, everyone! It’s so nice to meet you. I’m a native New Yorker who is excited to learn and experience life in Japan as a JET ALT. I’m American, from a Latino family (Ecuadorian & Dominican)! I actually applied to JET many years ago, didn’t get in and reapplied this year. It was a shocking and joyous surprise to be chosen to be part of the JET Program this time around. I feel so grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
My connection with Japan and its culture has been present since my childhood. I have a lot of appreciation for different cultures as learning about Japanese culture and growing up in NYC helped shape my own interests/my life! I applied to become a JET ALT as a challenge to push me outside of my comfort zone in order to grow, heal and to connect to the bigger world. It took a lot of help and teamwork to make it this far! I’ve worked for many years with the general NYC public and feel like I’ve grown into a whole other person in the last few years. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and having new experiences in Ehime! Earlier this year I found myself eating a million tangerines for some reason, now I knowー Ehime was calling 🥹. I can’t wait to eat a mikan 🙂
Feel free to stop and chat should we cross paths! 🍊✨

Since I was a kid, I’ve always been interested in Asian culture. I’m half Filipino and the western suburbs of Melbourne Australia are rich in Asian culture and diasporas. As such, I’ve spent a lot of time immersed in Asian cultures, both academically and casually. Japanese culture and history has always been a strong interest of mine, and during Asian studies in University, JET was on my radar. Before I introduce what I was doing before the JET program, I would like to introduce myself a bit:
Hi. My name is Matt Yeung, I’m possibly one of the youngest JETS this year (along with maybe a few people the same age as me), being only 21. The JET program is my first full-time job, so it is quite an experience already. As of the day I’m writing this (24/09), I’ll be almost reaching my 2 month mark being in Japan.
Before JET, I was just a fresh graduate student from the University of Western Australia. I had a triple major in Criminology, Law & Society and Japanese. I came across the JET program during my final semester of university, and it was then that I recalled that I’ve heard of and knew of the JET program since I was in year 9 (approximately 14 years old, so 7 years ago).
As someone who wants to pursue a career in primary school teaching in the future, I have decided to take a chance to see if I can be involved in the JET program. Against all odds, I somehow got myself a spot within the Perth group from Western Australia. It has been an honor to be able to work under the JET program and experience life and teaching in Japan. A philosophy I have about children is that primary education is one of the most important moments in their lives. This is where children find their role models, learn and develop meaningful skills for the future. When a child doesn’t have anyone to look up to, they can easily become lost, which is why I hope that I can fill that role for the lost children in the future. It doesn’t look like an easy task to me, or probably any readers, but who doesn’t like an impossible looking challenge? Life isn’t fun without these absurdly difficult challenges…
Anyways, while I’m here in Japan, I hope to have gained some much needed experience for potentially my future career, and also explore the cultural differences between Australian classrooms and Japanese classrooms (which is very much visible given I’ve been here for around 2 months, but YES it’s very visible). Finally, creating bonds and making friends from across the world is always on the list, it’s just the one thing that would never be crossed out on the “bucket list”.
Hobbies/Interests: My hobbies include gaming, building Gundam and practicing Kobudo (an Okinawan Martial Art). I am currently interested in exploring the ways of Kendo, since my junior high school in Futami has the Ehime Ken Junior High Champion. Kendo is more popular than I thought it would be in Japan, so I will be more than happy to try it out someday.
Other than that, I have always wanted to visit every single Gundam Base in Japan, to check out the 1:1 scale statues that they have there, and get some limited edition Gundam. It is a hobby for people with lots of patience, as you have to carefully refine all pieces you cut out, as well as apply finer detail with 0.1mm pens and stickers.
On top of that, (this may come as a red flag for some, but I’m gonna say this: “deal with it, you can’t stop me”) I do play quite a bit of League of Legends. Some may see that as a negative thing, but that’s their problem, not mine. I already started a new account on the Japanese server. I guess I’ll just limit-test myself and see how far I can go in Japan on the ranks…
Finally, I’m already doing this but living alone has always been something I’ve wanted to try out. Since I turned 20, I’ve believed that I can survive all by myself, given that I have a stable job and all that. The JET program has given me the perfect opportunity to test my limits, and help myself grow more independent throughout time.

Applying to JET came to me like a vision during the summer before my junior year of College. I came to the realization I was unlikely to seriously pursue two dreams of mine: teaching and immersing myself abroad. I hadn’t seriously considered it until then, but suddenly I knew that if I didn’t pursue the JET Program, I would always regret it. In my future, I plan to become a lawyer and work in Government, so the moment after I graduated from College would be the best, possibly only, time to immerse myself abroad and work as a teacher. I reworked my course schedule to take classes on Japanese language and culture and never looked back. I am hoping for the experience of a lifetime and an opportunity to widen my perspective on culture to better work as a civil servant in the United States later in life.
I have always been fascinated by Japan (I’m guilty of watching too much anime in middle school), but I am still in awe that I will have the opportunity to live and work here. I am from Minnesota, USA, and graduated from The University of Pennsylvania in May 2024 with a bachelor’s in Economics and Political Science and minors in Japanese, mathematics, and data analytics.
Hobbies/Interests: I want to get involved in local sports groups if possible, I love baseball, basketball, and weightlifting. I also hope to attend Catholic mass in Matsuyama (would love to have a church buddy!). I’m also hoping to do a lot of travel around the surrounding region. I’ve never been to Asia or done much travel before, so I want to get the most out of this opportunity. Overall I love wandering cities or the great outdoors, so I just hope to get lost in Japan.

Before arriving in Japan, I had been getting bogged down with my work as a musician/producer― a career path that I had been singularly focused on ever since graduating with a degree in English Literature. I was aware of JET prior to university and applied as soon as I could, but I was ultimately unsuccessful… twice (that’s a long story short). Fate tends to have other plans, but I desperately needed a change in my life and I thought I’d give it one last roll of the dice. Et voilà, I’m here, in a city that I have quickly come to adore ― my lovely Matsuyama. The experience I’ve had so far has been worth the struggle, and I’ll hold on to it forever.

In my bygone university years, where I studied English Literature, I frequented my university’s Anime and Japan societies. It was during this time that I traveled to Japan for the first time with a group of like-minded friends. For a whole month, I immersed myself in Japanese culture, and experienced how unique and beautiful the landscape is, and how kind its people were. I always knew I wanted to return! Even though I was unambitious and unsure of what I wanted to do (and my confidence in learning foreign languages was shattered by GCSE French studies) I knew teaching abroad was something I wanted to try my hand at, so I applied to the JET program out of university. Unfortunately, fate (in the guise of our friend COVID-19) would have other plans for me, and my dream to teach abroad was put on hold while I returned to my safe, if unfulfilling, part-time job.
Four years (three spent at a new, far more fulfilling job in a North London school as a Teaching assistant), a TEFL qualification, and two applications later, I’ve finally found myself here in Japan, ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime!
Hobbies/Interests: In terms of Japan, I’m a fan of everything! I love the food, the fascinating history, the wildlife, and the unique customs! I’m a big fan of anime, and am always watching something currently airing, or listening to some show’s theme song while I engage in my other hobbies, playing video games, going for long runs, and slowly but surely learning to cook! I’m also a kaiju film FANATIC. I have more graphic t-shirts with Godzilla on them then I could ever possibly need to wear, and could stand there talking to you about the thematic differences between the Showa, Heisei and Reiwa era films until you inevitably get bored and leave. I’m also super into Dinosaurs, and one of the places in Japan I’d love to visit is Fukui prefecture; a hotspot for Japan’s paleontology scene. Please talk to me about any of the above at any point if you share my interests! (or just want some white noise in the background while you do something more interesting)

My name is Lui, from the UK, and I’m 21 years old (at the time of writing). I’m fresh out of university after getting my BSc in Psychology.
Why JET?
Well… so my parents technically met through JET because my dad () was an ALT about 30 years ago and was placed in Gunma prefecture which is where he met my mum () – who was working at the prefectural / government office at the time I believe. So I suppose that makes me a *literal* product of the JET Programme? A JET nepo-baby some might even say…?
*Note: the reason they met was not what inspired me to apply to the programme but if the same fate happens to me then that’s just a bonus*
I should also preface that my mother being Japanese unfortunately does not equate to me being very ‘nihongo jouzu’ like you may expect.
Truthfully, there are a lot of reasons why I applied, but the main ones were that I had a desire to go to Japan for a very long time, didn’t know what to do after uni, wanted to escape a little bit, and wanted to develop the Japanese half of myself a bit more. Fortunately enough for me, JET ticked all those boxes and now I’m lucky enough to say that I’m here!
Hobbies/Interests: To me, the thing that I’m chasing the most is some form of peace of mind. I think I’m a bit of an old soul who just loves nature and the peaceful things in life which help me feel present. Being placed right between the beach and the mountains has been such a blessing in that regard. I really love some of the simple things in life and just spending time with good, loving people (of which there are many in Ehime!).
That being said though, that doesn’t mean I don’t love thrilling things either. In the last few years before leaving home, I was in a series of large theatre productions / musicals which is something I’ve always loved.
Like most people, I’m hoping to be able to travel around and explore some of Japan whilst I’m here 🙂

When I was younger, I wanted to be a horror film director or an investigative journalist. But instead, I graduated with a degree in Education and immediately went on to teach in the real world as soon as I passed the board exam and earned my teaching license. I taught kids from an Indigenous community when I was deployed somewhere in a remote area located on top of a mountain in the southern part of the Philippines, where I learned the art of meditation and ✨mental health✨. But it’s true what they say: When you’re standing on top of a mountain, you realize how big the world actually is. So, what do you do? You pack your entire life in two suitcases and move to Japan to become an ALT.
Hobbies/Interests: When I’m not on my phone mindlessly scrolling and excessively bookmarking links to random Reddit threads, I try my best to be creative. I devour films, TV series, songs, novels, and (especially) poetry all in an attempt to understand the Universe just a little better.
My pastimes include curating Spotify playlists, writing murky poetry, cooking sinigang, dreaming of time travel, and binging true-crime series.
I am still trying to figure things out. And that should be okay. As you’re reading this, I’m probably thinking about what food I want to eat, fighting with people on the internet, or watching funny videos on TikTok.
Oh, I’m also a very kind person. 🙂 I’m pretty sure. 😬

Hey, I’m Oscar! I’m from London and I’m an ALT heading to Matsuyama.
For the last few years I’ve been doing procurement and I decided it was definitely time for a career switch. I’d been planning to go abroad to teach English straight after university, but I graduated in 2020 which made that pretty difficult.
At university I studied furniture making and product design.
After hearing about JET from a friend I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to try again and I can’t wait to arrive! (Although I am definitely dreading the heat).
I visited Japan for the first time earlier this year and I loved it. My Japanese is currently pretty basic but I hope to learn a lot more while I’m there.
I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and especially looking forward to Japanese food!
Hobbies/Interests: I love running and hiking as well as watching films and photography (I have a collection of old cameras and I’m still trying to work out which ones to bring haha). I also love to travel and hope to explore all of the food, culture, history and sights that Japan has to offer.

Hi! I’m Sam. I am a fourth generation Japanese American. I was born and raised in Northern California. I visited Japan with my family in May 2023. I realized I wanted to spend more time here and enjoy everyday life in a different country.
During high school and college, I volunteered for a literacy nonprofit and worked for different organizations that supported education access and reform. Participating in JET gives me the opportunity to live abroad and continue working towards my graduate school ambitions. I hope to return to the U.S. with a better understanding of Japanese people and culture.
Hobbies/Interests: I play fantasy football each year with my college friends. I also follow the Sacramento Kings and F1! I love skiing and am hoping to make it up to Hokkaido this season.
I am so glad I was placed in a walkable community. As the weather cools down, I look forward to exploring more areas of Matsuyama!

Kumusta? (How’s it going?)
Before coming to Japan, I spent five years as a public school teacher in the Philippines, teaching secondary to university students. I also worked part-time as an online ESL tutor for a Japanese company. I loved my work back home, and leaving was difficult, especially knowing how much my students needed me. But deep down, I always felt a calling to do more and to explore new horizons. Eventually, my childhood dream of living and working abroad grew stronger, and I decided to follow it.
I first heard about the JET Programme in 2018, but life had other plans, and I wasn’t ready to pursue it then. As the program became more well-known in the Philippines, I finally took the plunge. A week before the November 2023 deadline, I submitted my application, thinking, “Bahala na” (Thy will be done). Now, that dream has turned into reality, and here I am! I love the people I met so far, and I also love that Ehime feels incredulously similar to my hometown.
Hobbies/Interests: During my teenage years and early 20s, I spent most of my time studying—working on weekdays and studying on weekends—so I didn’t really have the chance to develop many hobbies. Now that I’m in Japan, I’m hoping to change that. I want to live a more active lifestyle, explore new places, and make meaningful connections.
I have a deep interest in films, food (both cooking and discovering new dishes), local culture, writing, studying languages, and music. I love singing and would love to learn how to play an instrument someday! While I’m here, I look forward to traveling across Japan, attending festivals, immersing myself in its rich traditions and culture, and learning more about Japanese beliefs and customs.
One dream of mine is to spend Christmas in Hokkaido, experiencing the white Christmas I’ve romanticized for so long. My time in Japan has been wonderful so far, and I’m excited for all the adventures still to come!

In July last year, sitting at my desk at an advertising job I hated, I impulse booked a solo trip to Japan for later that year. Within a couple of months, I was bopping around this country I’d been fascinated with since I was tiny. It was a completely surreal experience, and it had me strongly considering how I could spend a bit more time there in the future. As I left for my trip, my colleagues joked about how I wouldn’t come back and, less than one year later, here I am!
The JET application process was tricky for me. I struggled to keep up momentum over the 9-10 months it took and often wondered whether I was doing the right thing. Still, having had a taste of teaching in 2020 and loved it, the excitement of a different job in a new place spurred me on. I’m glad I stuck with it and I can’t wait to see what the next year brings 🙂
Hobbies/Interests: Skiing, drinking tea, cooking, learning languages, Pokémon, hiking, travelling, drawing, writing, wild swimming, collecting fountain pens and inks, reading, cycling, foraging, gaming (Zelda; Hollow Knight; Witcher III; Animal Crossing), to name a few lol.

I’ve been working as a translator for many years, but I also have teaching experience. I’ve always loved Japanese culture but had never been here. I dreamed of moving to Japan someday, so the JET program offered the perfect path for me to do that. I came via Hawaii, where I went to university and studied art.
Hobbies/Interests: I love hiking, singing and playing the guitar, studying new things and a lot more. I want to explore all aspects of Japanese culture, including calligraphy, sumo and anything else that crosses my path.

Kumusta? I’m Sherry from the Philippines, also known as the Pearl of the Orient Sea. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education with a major in English. I have also completed some units in a Master of Education program focusing on English and Language Teaching. I am passionate about engaging in meaningful conversations and forming connections with people. I certainly find joy connecting with nature, singing, cooking, hiking, and traveling.
After dedicating nine years to teaching at the junior and senior high school levels in the Philippines, I’ve made the decision to seek my ‘ikigai’ in Japan. This concept, deeply rooted in Japanese culture itself, provides not only a guide for finding purpose but also for living a fulfilling life. Also, I have decided to pursue opportunities in Japan to gain insights into its unique culture, language, and educational framework.
Moreover, I am enthusiastic about sharing the rich cultural heritage of my homeland with everyone at the school as an ALT in Japan. Let’s all come together and create valuable experiences, despite our differences. 🙂
Hobbies/Interests: I am passionate about engaging in meaningful conversations and forming connections with people. In my spare time, I find joy in nature, singing, cooking, and traveling.

Before JET, I was a student at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I majored in neuroscience and minored in biology. Outside of science classes, I took Japanese language and culture classes! I also took Japanese for four years in high school. Ultimately, I want to be a doctor! However, before committing to an intensive path, I wanted to explore my interest in Japan and take a gap year before returning to health care! I also have some experience teaching and mentoring and I wanted to be a part of a program that supported a cross cultural exchange and community building!
Hobbies/Interests: During my free time, I like to run, play board games, and read! My favorite book is Norwegian Wood by Murakami.
I also like exploring new parks and trails :). My favorite thing to do is show people the park near my house and hike with them. I am excited to see some cool new nature scenery and play games with fellow JETs and locals! I want to have game nights, so please feel free to ask for an invitation!

After graduating, COVID hit my travel plans pretty hard, so I started to take up online tutoring as a source of income and to fill my time. This led to a full time job teaching maths at a secondary school for three years where I made many great memories and met many wonderful people. However, I wanted a different experience and something that would push me out my comfort zone, which is when I applied for the JET.
Hobbies/Interests: In the UK I loved to bake, though without an oven and lots of different ingredients here, I’m gonna have to get creative about it. I also love video-games, playing my banjo, and collecting records. Living on the Shimanami-kaido leaves me no choice in taking up cycling as well.

I first heard about JET when I finished my undergrad in Biological Sciences from a classmate who decided to start her career teaching English in Japan. I then went on to teach science in high schools in North Carolina. When I got married, my husband and I went to Japan for our honeymoon where I had the amazing experience of having two very brave locals practice their English with me. I felt a calling to come help others enhance their English skills, so after a few more years I applied to JET.
Hobbies/Interests: I am either a homebody playing PC video games, working on embroidery, watching movies (especially horror), catching up with the newest hit TV show, or learning a new recipe. Or, I am outdoors exploring my surroundings by visiting lots of antique/second hand shops, walking along beaches/snorkeling, tubing/canoeing down a river, hiking along trails, and visiting must see tourist spots.

When I was 5 years old, I first saw season 2, episode 11 of The Simpsons, wherein Homer goes to a Japanese restaurant, eats a fugu fish and is diagnosed with 24 hours to live. The economic anxieties of America having to compete with Japan’s Kōdo keizai seichō and booming car manufacturing industry were palpable and as a little Irish boy I too feared the poison-eaters. The real country was a rumour I didn’t want to believe in.
8 years passed and Season 10 episode 23 of The Simpsons’ ‘Thirty Minutes over Tokyo’ saw the family in the eponymous city drawn like another planet with space age technologies like square watermelons and sumo. Wikipedia, alongside fandom sites will tell you the episode is completely banned here as it contains a scene of Homer throwing the then emperor into a laundry basket of dirty sumo thongs.
I had a conversation about that episode with a Japanese person who claimed to have seen the episode here and in Japanese on television twenty years ago. I don’t know what to believe about Japan. Despite extensive marketing from Fox, The Simpsons completely bombed in Japan when it was brought over. Homer and Bart were seen as too inconsiderate and sluggish to be funny.
I’m closer to Homer’s age than Bart’s now and realise some risks are worth taking and shells to come out of. There’s the Japan I’m scared of and the Japan I’m excited for. Both as real as the other. Either way I’m ready to try the fugu fish. (though I’m told its quite tasteless)

新居浜市地域で国際交流員(CIR)として勤務させていただくことになりました、クイと申します。
My name is Quy and I’m a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) in Niihama City.
私は中学生の頃から日本語を学び始め、アニメや日本文化に夢中になり、いつか必ず日本に行きたいという夢を抱いていました。
I started learning Japanese in junior high school and became interested in anime and Japanese culture so I dreamed of going to Japan someday.
I pursued this dream by continuing my Japanese studies through college, taking small steps toward my goal. Eventually, I had the opportunity to study at Doshisha University in Kyoto for a year. After that, I participated in a six-month internship program at the JAL Foundation, focusing on Japanese language, culture, and the business environment.
I was very happy that my dream had come true, but I didn’t want it to end there. Therefore, I decided to work as a CIR in Niihama City to provide a place to help foster mutual understanding between people in Vietnam and Japan. I would like to hold various events and activities related to Vietnam so that others can discover its unique charms.

I have always loved being around kids. After attending university, I worked in a private school for a year and eventually landed a role as an ESL teacher for foreign students. Teaching and interacting with coworkers and students from different backgrounds broadened my perspective on life and exposed me to different cultures. Particularly, listening to the stories of my Japanese students sparked my curiosity about their culture, transported me to different places, and gave me a glimpse of a life I was once unaware of. I heard about the JET program through one of my colleagues, but it took me years to finally give it a try. Fast forward to 2024, I am now living and working in Japan, meeting a lot of people from different places around the world, and learning more about life.
Hobbies/Interests: As someone who’s a kid at heart, I find joy in the simple things, like gazing at the sky or greeting Luna whenever she makes an appearance. I love immersing myself in nature while diving into self-help books (I’d be thrilled to hear any recommendations you might have) or listening to a wide range of music—from tracks that bring tears to those that make me want to shout along at the top of my lungs. My love for art has me bubbling with excitement whenever I get the chance to explore museums and art galleries.
I’m looking forward to the day I can visit Art Island, chat with locals in Japanese (with my skills hopefully up to the task), and fully experience Japan through its festivals, cuisine, and natural beauty.

I recently graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a degree in Graphic Communication. While my major prepared me for a career in print and graphics, I have always had interest in education/preservation of U.S. Japantowns. As a fifth-generation Japanese American, I often feel very detached from my heritage and community. JET is my opportunity to reconnect with Japan, hopefully allowing me to connect more meaningfully with Nikkei worldwide!
Hobbies/Interests: I really enjoy printmaking, hiking, and trying new foods and recipes. I’m hoping to pick up a new creative outlet while in Japan, and will be looking out for opportunities to learn! Before becoming an ALT, I finished my program in TESOL last December and was subbing in several districts throughout the region until I was removed from the alternate waitlist for JET. There were moments when I doubted that I would be able to take part in this experience, but now that I am here, surrounded by rivers and mountains, I could not envision a more spectacular place to be!
Hobbies/Interests: I love running, soccer and volleyball, as well as card making/flower pressing, hiking, singing, and playing guitar. Hobbies/Interests: My hobbies are singing, listening to music, watching anime and K-dramas. I am interested in learning languages such as Korean, Japanese and Spanish, exploring Asian culture, cuisine and travelling to Asian countries.
